The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Rotation

You may or may not know that Mr. Hubs is an anesthesiology resident. This means he is a doctor in training. In other words, he is a doctor, but he has a couple of zeroes missing on his paycheck. It goes like this: undergraduate degree (debt), medical school (debt), residency, fellowship. We have less than four months left of residency and then a one year fellowship left. And then we're done. Thirteen years of training, and we're on year 11.75, but really, who's counting. The experience has been truly amazing. Would I love more money to decorate as I please and to shop Nordstrom the way it was meant to be shopped? Duh. But, it's been great. We've lived in three states, met amazing people, and had experiences we wouldn't have had otherwise.

But guess what? I'm not going to miss it. You see, I will miss places and people, but I will get my husband back, and I kind of like that guy. And, I especially like him when he's rested, which I kind of don't remember him being in years. Which brings me to the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad rotation...

First of all, if you or your hubs works nights, you are amazing, and I don't know how you do it. Mr. Hubs just finished a two week rotation of trauma nights. His hours were 7pm to 7am. Silly, naive me thought, How bad can this be? We get to have him home during the day! Wrong. Well, right...he was home during the day...sleeping. We got to see him for about 30 minutes when he got home in the morning, 30 minutes when he woke up at lunchtime to eat and maybe an hour before he went to work again. On the weekends, he would get up in the middle of the night and watch TV for three hours. I can't make the beds, because he is in them (yes, both of them at different times, of course). We can't have our dance parties, because they are too loud. And, quite frankly, sleepy post-call boys cooped up in a room all day are just stinky. A couple of times, Stella asked if Daddy still lived with us. It really made me feel for those of you who do this all the time. I could hardly last a couple of weeks. I know.  I'm a wimp. I like my husband home, and really, nights would be ideal...if only Hubs didn't need sleep, but he does. Apparently, I'm not the only wimpy one in the family.

  2. My older brother is an anesthesiologist and I remember they went through some lean years like you're going through now. But the good news was that they found some great things for their home at antique stores and estate sales during that time. He's been practicing for years but the pieces in his home that are unique and interesting are all the things they purchased during those days when the paychecks didn't have all the zeros. You were blessed with that creativity gene and your home looks young and fun.

  3. Tom used to work from home and it was kind of the same. I had to keep Morgan quiet and away from the office. It was awful. I'm glad you don't have to do that rotation again!

  4. i feel jamie!!! i haven't hated what jake does more than the last 3 months. he has had some horrible rotations! i feel bad that i hate living this way because i'm trying to not think of the future but it is extremely hard when we just don't see him and we have no family or money to go see them. jake is switching over to nights today and i hate them. but honestly i don't like day or night. we don't see him either way. can you tell i'm sick of this? and we only have a 3 year residency. hats off to those that have much harder residencies. i can't wait to get my husband back and not be slaves to the medical field. i hope you get to see your sweet jeremy more often and soon.

  5. I can’t imagine how heartbreaking that must have been when asked if your husband still lived there. At least you know you’re in the home stretch. It’s definitely a tough road!

  6. So glad that your husband's bad rotation is over. I know what you mean about wanting to have your husband home at night. It's not the same as your husband, but my husband's job requires lots of travel depending on the month. And it stinks! :-)

  11. If we are going to talk about murals, it is a harsh reality that there are people who do not appreciate artworks like this. I fell bad, but there is less that I can do; I want them to realize that murals are beautiful and worth appreciating. But I simply don't know where to start. I don't know assignment writing help if that is going to be effective, but I want to give it a try.
