Symmetry, a Word After My Own Heart

sym-me-try: an imprecise sense of harmonious or aesthetically pleasing proportionality and balance; such that it reflects beauty or perfection

Perhaps it's a reflection of my OCD tendencies, but I just love a symmetrical room (at least for the bones of the room). It's not that I dislike rooms that are not symmetrical--I can be crazy, but something about symmetry just catches my eye. It says structure, order, and I'm serious--but not too serious. And, by the way, I am dying over the green chairs in the first picture. Even though, I am only getting a glimpse, I can just tell that they are fabulous. Love!

Zig Zag, Zig Zag

Everywhere I look, I see zig zags. On one hand, I would love a chevron rug, on the other hand, maybe too many people have them, so they're not that original. And, realistically, I just can't do that to my husband (buy one more rug). Let's give it some time! What is it that I love so much about the classic chevron? It's a clean line with attitude!

White Kitchens

Back to that dream house of mine...I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when I suddenly fell in love with white kitchens. It's only right that my OCD self would feel most comfortable in something so clean, but not sterile-looking space. I mean, really, these kitchens just scream order and cleanliness, and you know what they say about cleanliness! My favorite of the three is most definitely Chris Kauffman's. I love the contrast of white cabinets against a dark hard wood floor, and the industrial, stainless appliances are a must. Surprisingly, my husband is on board with white cabinets and dark floors. We'll see if I change my mind before it's even an issue!

Pretty in Pink

I've never really been a pink room kind of girl. Even my daughter's nursery isn't pink. With that being said, I would probably never think to do a living room in pink. After seeing these rooms, I'm definitely starting to rethink my color choice! These pink rooms are absolutely gorgeous. I especially love the first room designed by Sarah Richardson (love, love, love her). The pinks in her room are quite subtle, but I also love the other two rooms where the pink is definitely not subtle. Just bea-u-ti-ful!!

Neutral with a Splash of Color

When I buy furniture, I typically go with something neutral keeping in mind that a) I might have it for longer than a few years, and b) I always want change and by having a neutral piece, I can change the pillows and accessories whenever my little heart desires. These couches, however, are to die for. I love how they are the focal pieces of each room, and there is really not much other color in the room to compete with the couches. Wouldn't it be fun to have a sitting room with one of these? I love them, and really, blue is pretty much a neutral. I think just about every color goes with blue.

Tufted Headboards

I've been seeing a lot of tufted headboards lately, and I absolutely love them! They just say luxury, don't they? The headboards are just the right combination of traditional meets contemporary. IF I had a guest room, and IF I needed a bed for my guest room, I would choose one with a tufted headboard! Although, maybe that would make people stay too long. Perhaps I should rethink this! Here are some of my favorites:

Outdoor Living Spaces

My husband is in his second year of an anesthesia residency. So, in my dreams, not only is he finished with his residency, but we also have a house--not a rental, not a house far away from all our family, but a real house, a house we'll be in for more than a few years. In the meantime, I'll dream about my house!

In my dreams, I would have an outdoor living space. Aren't they just lovely? Now, since I'm dreaming, I can make my space exactly how I want it! I like the idea of a seating area and an eating area. While I'm not sure if I want a TV outside, I definitely want a fireplace and a built in grill, so that my husband can cook for me every night. Hey, it's my dream!

Rug Redo: Painting Rugs

Wow, I've been obsessed with rugs! I promise this will be my last post on rugs--for a while, anyway! Ever heard of painting a rug? Well, my curiosity got the best of me, and I tried it. Here's how it went down:

I started with this 4x6 jute rug in sage. I also started with the idea that this would be a little project that would probably only cost about $20. After all, it was only a 4x6 surface, right? Wrong!

To appease my navy mood, I chose a shade of navy. I started with a quart of latex paint (not even close to enough) just to see how this little project would go. As you can see, one coat could not finish the job. I ended up buying another gallon. The fibers of the rug soak up the paint. I painted on the first coat, and then rolled on the second coat. At this point in the process, I didn't know if this would work, but there was no turning back!

When the navy dried, the rug actually looked really good, so I decided to move forward with the stripes. I taped on the stripes and painted them white. I was going for a less formal, faded look with the stripes, so I only did a couple of coats of the white. It took hardly any paint.

I pulled off the tape, and I was quite pleased with the finished product. My little project: $65-$70. I should also tell you that I simultaneously painted another jute rug in orange, but I didn't have enough paint to finish it, so it's upstairs in a closet. I'm guessing it will eventually go to the dumpster! This is typical of a lot of my DIY projects--they end up costing more than buying, or they end up in the garbage (or both)!
Now, the question is, "Would I do this again?" Though I would not cover an entire rug in paint (it took FOREVER to dry), this technique would definitely work if you wanted to add stripes or other patterns to a rug. It would also be a lot cheaper! Important things to remember: use latex paint; use an outdoor, sea grass, or jute rug; and don't try to paint a green rug navy!

Layering Rugs

I love the idea of layering rugs. We layer our clothes, our bedding, why not our rugs? I've used this concept to get more coverage on my floor, but I especially like the idea of layering a smaller rug directly on top of a larger rug. You can invest in a large, neutral area rug, and then switch out the smaller one whenever you need a change. If you're anything like me, you need a change often! I love these rooms!

Speaking of Rugs...

I've really been into these hide rugs lately. I love the idea of adding another texture and print to the room, and I am super into layering rugs (more on that later). Unfortunately, by the time I would purchase something so trendy, they may be a thing of the past. They are already popping up everywhere. Ironically, I grew up in the country, so I'm sure I had easy access to cowhides. I'm just worried that these hides might be a little too authentic for the house!

Dash and Albert Rugs

During my search for just the right rug, I discovered Dash and Albert. My search was over! Unfortunately, my discovery was after the purchase and return of five or six other rugs. (It's pretty sad when you lose count!) I love the look and feel of these rugs. They carry wool, cotton, indoor/outdoor, and variations of these materials. These rugs just say cozy! They are contemporary, yet not pretentious. These are some of my favorites:

diamond sprout/white indoor/outdoor

vine chocolate tufted wool

circle fret tufted wool

lighthouse denim/white indoor/outdoor

I personally own the lighthouse denim/white indoor/outdoor rug. I don't know why, but lately, I've had a thing for striped rugs, and since I've also been into navies and blues, I ended up liking the rugs with a bit of a nautical feel! I decided to go with an indoor/outdoor rug, because you can literally spray them off if you need to, but this one doesn't feel stiff like a jute or sea grass. Another great thing about Dash and Albert is that they offer free shipping, and they are always the same price no matter where you purchase them. If it makes you nervous to order an area rug online, there are several stores who carry this line and have large swatches to look at. I can't wait until I have the space and funds to get my hands on more of these rugs!

What's My Style?

I guess if I had to choose a word to describe my design style, I would say it is transitional. Transitional style is somewhere between contemporary and traditional. I would say I lean more toward contemporary, but I like to add traditional pieces here and there. I enjoy mixing the two styles.
I love the contemporary elements in the above pictures--the clean lines of the Elle Decor sofa, the vases, and coral; the zebra rug, lamps, and coffee table from Alice Lane. I equally love the traditional elements like the accent chair and coffee table legs from Elle Decor. I absolutely love the sofa from Alice Lane with the nail-head edging and tufts.
I don't like matchy-matchy, and I like to mix textures and prints that are unexpected. I like a little personality in a room! My goal is to make my rooms look effortless, even though they're not! And lastly, I like my rooms to be unlike any other, to constantly evolve, and to make you say, I'd like to spend some time here!"

Everything You Want to Know. And More.

I'm Jamie, mommy to Stella, wife to Jeremy, and creator of kreyv. My obsession with interior design started as a yellow loving, decided six year old. A sunny, yellow floral wallpaper with antique dressers and a brass headboard was my perfect choice for the first grade princess I thought I was, only to be changed again and again (and again) as my design choices evolved. Asking for new wallpaper or furniture for Christmas was a normal occurrence growing up, and I can't say that much has changed!I am currently living in the St. Louis, Missouri area with my wonderful, practically perfect husband Jeremy and my beautiful, also practically perfect daughter, Stella. Though we have lived and loved living in the midwest for the past six years, we hope to eventually return to the west, which is home to us.I originally started this blog as a catalog for ideas and inspiration and then decided to share it with others. There is something about before and afters, adding perfect touches, and creating that I crave. I believe the home is the most important place and should be a reflection of the people who live there. Thank you for visiting. I hope you find ideas and inspiration!
