Baby Girl Nursery | Juliet

The hardest part about designing a space for a client is to not go out and buy everything for myself. I am absolutely IN LOVE with this space. My client wanted a room that could grow with her daughter; wanted an unexpected color palette; a double bed in the room; and a reading corner. I know you haven't seen the space, but in my brain, it's amazeballs! Each of my clients receive a detailed design concept and summary, so they don't have to use their imaginations as much as you do, but trust me, this one's maj! I kind of want to move in!

Favorite Kids' Spaces

In our new place, we have a small playroom. I would LOVE to do a fun design in the room, but since we may only be here for a year, the room is last on the list. Hopefully, we'll have a playroom again...and hopefully, our kid(s) will be young enough to need a playroom by the time that happens! I kind of love having a room to put all of Stella's toys in--a room where I can just shut the door if I don't like the way it looks. So, yes, I am a fan of playrooms, the ONLY, teeny, tiny problem is that Stella doesn't really like to go down there and play...just a little bit of an issue.

Nice 'n Cozy

This time of year makes me just want to cuddle with my family in front of the fireplace that we don't have. If I did have one, there would be a fire in it, even though it's about 65 degrees outside. You really don't even need to wear a coat, unless you want to wear one, and that's what's so awesome about this time of year. Shorts, coats, fire, windows open...it's all completely acceptable.

Monogram Love

I absolutely love adding a monogram (or two) to a room. It's cool and classic and sophisticated. Me likey. (Phrases like that perfectly illustrate that I clearly need more sophistication in my life.) My monogram is probably the trickiest letter. It's not symmetrical, it doesn't stand up on its own, and, well, it's just a line with a curly tail. The only cool thing about my monogram is that I have three lines with three curly tails. And even cooler? So does the mister. JJJ & JJJ. Is that meant to be, or what?! But still. I'm a little jealous of the rest of you with your M's, H's, T's...you get the point. I'm jealous. With a J.

[so cheap, so easy]: PB Teen Lab Book Ends

Genius. Plastic animals, wooden blocks, and spray paint. Thank you PB Teen for the great idea, and sorry, you won't be getting $49.00 plus shipping from me.

Whatever.

The last few days I've been like a small child running to the mailbox. (Ok, when I say running, I mean walking out to my car, turning on the air conditioning full blast, and driving. It is so freaking hot here.) You see, I'm expecting a pillow. The last two days I was sure it would be here. Nope. You know what I got today instead? A letter from one of Jeremy's student loan lenders reminding us that we STILL have about a bajillion dollars of medical school debt. Yeah, last time I checked that was the complete opposite of a Pottery Barn pillow. Boo. In the meantime, here is what I'm loving from Pottery Barn's fall collection. Whatever.

Closets and Tears

Wouldn't it be awesome to have one of these to die for, must have, dream closets? I seriously would just hide in there and look at all of my beautiful clothes and shoes, that of course, I would have to buy, so that my wardrobe was worthy of my closet. Make sense? I knew it would.
Today I went through four bins and packed up all of Stella's 0-12 month clothes to ship to Utah. There were a lot of memories in those bins of clothes, like the outfit we brought her home from the hospital in; or the little, silver ballet flats that she wore to her temple sealing; or the itty bitty jammies with the yellow ducks on them. I cried (and it still makes me cry). Stella said, "Mommy sad." She then sat on my lap and gave me one of her little hugs--the ones where she squeezes tight and gives a little pat on my back. And then...she put a magnet down my shirt, and the moment pretty much ended there. Can I not have a serious conversation with anyone in this house without someone trying to put something down my shirt? Sheesh!

One for Me, One for You

I absolutely love the look of two twin beds for a kid's room. LOVE it.  And, quite frankly, I'd take any one of these beds.  Actually, I'd take any two of these beds.  They are all fabulous!
Okay, complete change in subject...(What? Don't act like I never do that.) Can you even believe Thanksgiving is on Thursday?  It's practically Christmas already.  And, what I REALLY can't believe is that my little Stella is going to be TWO on Wednesday (sniff, sniff).  Before I know it, she's going to have a room with two beds having sleep overs with her buddies.  I can't handle it.  (That's right, I always loop back around, and it all ties in at the end of the post!)

[color kreyv]: Purple & Green

Purple and green. It sounds a little scary at first, but look how beautiful these spaces are! I've always loved the colors for a little girl's room, but look how sophisticated it looks in this entry from Apartment Therapy. I guess we're not really talking about a true purple and a true green, because that could be a little much. It's really a chartreuse and plum; pear and lilac; and sage and lavender. How did I do? Let me guess, that's EXACTLY what you were thinking. Good. Glad we're on the same page.

PB Kids: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We had a great time in Utah, but it's so good to be home and back to our routines! Besides my hubby (of course), I had two other favorite things waiting for me: lots of good shows on the dvr and piles of catalogs waiting for me! I love that!

I haven't had a chance to look through the catalogs, but I did look through the first few pages of PB Kids. I'm not big on themes, but I love their new The Very Hungry Caterpillar line. SO cute! I love Eric Carle's books, and the vibrant, organic art paired with the rustic elements (that towel rack is to die for) looks fabulous in these rooms. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.

Timeless Trends

I must say that I've missed seeing Nate's beautiful, smiling face every day on The Nate Show. How dare he take the summer off. I'll forgive him. After all, Nate can do no wrong in my eyes. I do hope, however, that when the new season starts again, the shows are more centered around design than they were last season. I'll have to talk to Nate about that next time we go to lunch. Anything else you'd like me to tell him?
On a past episode, Nate had Michelle Adams from Lonny Mag as his guest. She highlighted three timeless trends. Here they are (by the way, I think I need monogrammed soap):

Nailhead Trim

I LOVE nailhead trim. Yesterday, I swear I could have hammered in every single one of those teeny, tiny nails. With. My. Forehead. Yeah. It was that kind of day.

As you know, I'm potty training, and IT IS ROUGH! Let's just say there was a lot of pee on the floor and very little in the potty. I think Stella and I were equally frustrated! I'm not giving up, though(yet).

My wonderful high school bestie, Jera called me and gave me a much needed pep talk. Then the best husband in the world came home and took over with Stella, did the dishes from the lame last minute meal that I made, and then he even gave me a foot rub without me asking. It was just what I needed to face another day of wet undies, wet floors, and lots of patience!

Seeing Double

First things first, don't forget to check out AND enter the Bugaboo Prints Giveaway! Now, on with our regularly scheduled program...

These are three of my very favorite shared kids' rooms. I love the Elle Decor beds (and that adorable rocking sheep). I love the map wallpaper and crispness of the Pottery Barn room. And, I love the ridiculously adorable tufted headboards paired with the polka dots in the Amanda Nisbet picture. To. Die. For.

I love the look of two beds in one room. I'm pretty much convinced that at least one of my kids will have to have two beds in his/her bedroom, even if he/she doesn't share the room. I would prefer to have the exact ones from the Elle Decor picture. I'm sure they are easy to find and are very cheap(wink, wink).

I'm Bunkin' at Your Joint

Ok, really. How awesome are these bunks? So awesome, that's what they are. Practical? Mmmmm, that might be a different story. I'll be honest, I'm not letting my kids sleep on the top bunks that are suspended by rope with no protection from the ground below. But if your kids want to come sleep over, we'll have a spare bed!

The good news is that you probably wouldn't feel claustrophobic in these bunks. The bad news is, you would just fear for your life if you rolled over one too many times! I speak the bottom, and good luck getting to the top bunks in the Pottery Barn picture. I don't design 'em, people, I just admire them!

Don't forget to enter the Bugaboo Prints giveaway!

[reader request]: Architectural Elements

I am oft times asked if I will post on a certain concept or look. Most of the time, I think, "What a great idea!" So, here it is, [kreyv]'s new series, [reader request]*.

My first request is by Joan from Milwaukee. Joan is one of my besties from Milwaukee. I love Joan to pieces. She is one of those people who just really cares about people, especially me (but who can blame her)! She is always very supportive, loving, and encouraging. She is just a happy person and was kind of like my Milwaukee mom. Joan also has great fashion sense and is rich. Just sayin.' (Don't worry, not every request will have a full bio of the reader, I just couldn't resist with Joan!)

Joan requested a post on decorating with architectural elements, so over the past few months I've been saving some of my favorites. Hope you find inspiration in them!

Memories of Wrought Iron

I used to teach second grade, and I really encouraged my students to make connections while reading. Does the book remind you of another book (text to text), of an experience (text to self), or of something happening in the world (text to world)? The idea was to take that connection and develop it into a story.

If you haven't noticed, I make a lot of connections. I'm kind of all over the place. You've noticed, haven't you? Well, I'll go ahead and call it making connections. You can call it random. I'm sure you can figure out where I'm heading with all of this...wrought iron reminds me of something.

The house that I grew up in had a very large balcony surrounded by wrought iron. My sister, my neighbor Gayle, and I would roller skate, have pool parties, and play hopscotch up there.

One day, we saw a car coming down the road. We thought it belonged to a man we went to church with. The three of us decided we would moon the guy. So down went our pants on the count of three. We were pretty proud of ourselves...until the car turned up our driveway. Did I mention my mom had a very similar car to the one we thought belonged to the man at church? She didn't think it was very funny, butt we did. (That was bad, I know--not the mooning, the use of the word butt.) We really felt like rebels at the age of 7, 9, and 10.

So that's it. That's my connection, and by the way, I am really loving these beds. The Anthropologie bed is kind of out there, but I kind of really love it.

[so cheap, so easy]: Cloth Napkin DIYs

Remember when I had that awesome giveaway? I gave away a gift card to West Elm. Well, I felt left out, so when I was ordering the gift card, I found a little somethin' somethin' for myself. Sometimes that happens to me. I can't help it. The cloth napkins sucked me in, and I bought them.

I bought two sets of four each for $12. You can't beat that. I made pillows with one set. No cutting, and even I can sew a pillow (with a little help).
image from Pottery Barn

These next beauties are from Pottery Barn. I bought a set of six block print napkins for $25. I'm not saying they are the cheapest napkins you can buy, but they were originally $39. Such a deal. (It's a reflex, me always justifying my purchases.) I've only used one so far, and I used it to cover these small lampshades. I love them! Of course, the cylindrical lampshade was the easiest, but I managed to make the other one look decent as well. You would never know they were covered with napkins. Well, you would, because I just told you.
I'm not sure what I'll do with the other napkins. They are so beautiful. They all have a different, coordinating pattern. In the past, I've used napkins to cover canvases, or I've framed them. The possibilities are really endless! Perhaps I will just use them at the table--THAT would be crazy.
